On August 13, 1967 I experienced the most significant event of my life. It was a sizzling hot summer day in the San Joaquin Valley of central California. Fresno’s First Southern Baptist Church was filled to capacity with 4 or 5 hundred worshipers. I knew I was a sinner who needed to be forgiven but had never said yes to Jesus. Looking back I could see that even as a child growing up in a home where God was not honored my heart hungered to be “born again”. Whenever even the name of Jesus was mentioned God’s Holy Spirit moved in my heart to convict me of my need for Jesus and His forgiveness of my sins.
On that summer Sunday just before noon there was a winsome invitation by Pastor Fisher to come forward to receive Jesus Christ into our heart as our personal Lord and Savior. My heart of hearts was moved sending me walking forward to the front of the church where I surrendered my life to Jesus. No other event, decision or experience comes close to comparing with my conversion to Christ on that Sunday morning 45 years ago. Nor is there anything I am more thankful for.
By God’s grace I was regenerated transformed into a new man. “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”(Ephesians 2:8-9 ) “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation…” (2 Corinthians 5:17-18 )
